Glucosamine

I have occasional joint reactions such as swelling in the days following runs and have began using both cod liver oil and glucosamine supplements. I don't use glucosamine every day, only on the day preceding, or day of a run. I am only 23 but am eager to minimize potential for knee injuries in future.
What do you think about the use of glucosamine in line with other measures to prevent joint problems for sports enthusiasts such as us?

I use glucosamine every day since my last knee-op (medial cartilage) last year. Both of my knees have had this operation done (one 20 years ago, and the other last year). I find the glucosamine makes a difference in that when I forget to take them then my knees don't feel as well cushioned as when I do take them. Sometimes I worry that this is all in my head though.

I am not planning on buying another batch until I have proven to myself that I still need them, and my current supply runs out next week some time.

I don't think it does any harm to take them. Although like most supplements, I don't think one should unnecessarily take stuff just for the sake of it.

Narayan,
I assume that you've been to a local running shop and had a gait analysis and been fitted with the correct shoes for your running style?

I take it. Badgered into it by my Dad who swears by it after his knee replacements. Not sure its doing anything to me but there again I am still learning to listen to my body after starting running last year.

"Snakeoil" were the words from a sports injury specialist, when I told him that I take glucosamine. He also provided me with a link to a study (I will see if I can dig it out) that proves that it makes no difference at all to either post operative, young or old athletes.

Having said that and listened to his advice, I still take it (1500mg per day)!!! I also take cod liver oil and B vitamins supplements.

Ok. We don't have a specialist running shop where I live, but I have seen a couple of specialists so I understand my pronation and the type of running shoe I have now is suitable. So how do you people decide whether or not you should take it......... Do you focus predominantly on personal experience or study results, or a balance of both?

Also, how do you determine how many, or which studies are necessary to consider a conclusion reliable?
