recovery shakes
Ok, so after getting all confused about which shake to get to help with not losing weight and/or recovery, I finally took the plunge and opted for recovery xs from myprotein.co.uk.
I won't get chance to try it until tomorrow, so before I mix it up, what do people recommend is best to make it with? It states on package to mix with water or juice, (i presume they mean pure juice?). It's just that I read some people were making these up with milk.
Oh, it's strawberry flavour by the way.
Finally, I was impressed with service from them, came really. Quick.

Adrian... I honestly can't imagine mixing the stuff up with juice... I know it says you can... but really - I just don't get it - I came to the assumption that they probably mean unflavoured stuff (like unflavoured whey protein) can be mixed with juice - but I honestly wouldn't try it with Recovery XS.
I've not tried the Strawberry stuff yet (have some on order atm actually), but the chocolate stuff I use 2 scoopfuls (=~90g) and add water to make it up to 400ml (so probably ~300ml water?). It doesn't taste great, but add too much water to it and it goes from being 'not particularly pleasant' to "urgh... I really don't think I can drink this - it tastes like dirty dishwater".
They do taste a lot more pleasant if mixed with milk, though I've heard it mentioned somewhere that mixing with milk where they're designed to mix with water can mess with the effectiveness of recovery drinks (changing carb rotein proportions etc), but how much truth there is in that I really don't know.
Oooh, If you haven't already - I would invest in a plastic shaker thing (like you see lots of gym bunnies glugging from) - they're really good for mixing the drink easily

thanks Richard...it was your recommendation that made me go for this one in the first place !
I figure I'm going to be at home when I get to make one up, and I've got a Magic Bullet quick blender thing that I'll probably use to mix it up quickly - can hardly lift my arms after a LSR let alone start shaking a bottle .
Must admit I'm not looking forward to drinking it though I'll wait and see if anyone else comments on the mixing with milk as I drink a lot of milk anyway so it may be easier. Won;t get to try it until tomorrow anyway so got plenty of time.
I've also been taking 1200mg glucosamine tablets daily now too, just perhaps need to get some cod liver oil tablets too, and then I'll be really rattling along!
Thanks again - your advice is always useful

I used this stuff, made it about half way through the bag before I couldn't take the taste anymore. Pretty sure it was the taste of the creatine element to it, maybe it would have been better if I had diluted it less as suggested by Richard. Either way I swapped it out for whey and lucozade (not mixed together, as one of my colleagues does!) which I seem to remember offered about a similar ratio of carbs to protein.

yeah, sorry Richard, it was only after I'd rushed through and placed the order I'd seen about the discount.

all i can say is.......
well, actually drinking it wasn't as bad as I thought, it was like a cheap bitty milkshake, it was just for the hour after I was very bloated, gassy , and a bit sick feeling.
Just glad I mixed the amount you said Richard, and not the recommended amount of water, don't think I could've managed at least another 100ml.
Fingers crossed that's just me getting used to it.
I was surprised when it turned pink when I added the water, even though it was strawberry

I certainly find I have to drink the choc one quite slowly to avoid gastrointestinal distress My strawberry one should be here on Monday If you really struggle with it... try it with milk, it does taste a lot nicer (though it's still no nesquik ) Quite filling too. I've found you get used to the rancid taste after a while though (but you'll never enjoy it, lol)

Personally I only take it after particularly hard sessions, which currently is only twice a week at most! If you can afford it (financially and calorifically), then there's no harm in taking it more regularly.
