Celiac Runners

Hey guys,

I was diagnosed celiac just under 2 years ago, before the test where confirmed i was told on several occasions that it was just "joggers tummy" and told to ease of the running. Now im back into running, i just cant seem to get a grip of my diet. I dont eat unhealthy but im sure theres more i can be doing/eating. I eat alot of brown rice and eggs, but im getting a bit fed up.

Can anyone shed some light on ways they change up there diet? That is of course if there is anyone on here in a similar boat.

i have problems brought on by bread, rice, potatoes etc but haven't been diagnosed with anything. i think mine is a gluten intolerance, so try to avoid things that set it off. if j do, I'm ok, if i dont like the last week then i end up living on anti diarrhea tablets.

i eat meat, veg, salad and just vary my veg.

Hey Josh, do you still have fairly regular appointments about the celiacs? If you dont go to your doctor and just ask for some ideas and support. My dad has celiacs although he doesnt run so I know it can be tough getting used to it.

Ashleigh its worth looking into further, for 5 to 6 years i kept being told IBS or joggers tummy etc. With further tests. I mean i used to live like that always in pain and on tablets now i find it hard to believe i put up with it.

Rhonwen yes i still see the specialists and dietitian, not very often though. I have a yearly appointment with my dietition. Which is usually a waste of time, they know what i can and cant eat but as they dont eat gluten free foods they are unaware at how bad it is and try to direct me to nicer foods. I rarely eat gluten substitutes, i tend to go for food that has no traces, rice, eggs, potatoes etc.

I just thought others suffering gluten intolerance could maybe shed some light on what they eat whilst in training.

I'll see if dad has any recommendations. I know he avoids any bread as the gluten free bread just isnt nice.

My partner has to avoid gluten as well (although she doesn't as run as much as me) but she manages to have a good varied diet, most of the time I eat the same thing as she at dinner. We buy special gluten free products like pasta, bread, we get gluten free flour to make other stuff (we probably make a lot more things than we did a few years ago). I even found for her some gluten free beer as she used to enjoy the odd ale!

I have been Coeliac for twenty years. Do you follow a strict gluten free diet? There is the Coeliac society who have a website. I have no problems. Run two marathons and 6 halves and fell runs no problem at all. ask away I have some experience on this subject.

Hi Josh,

I don't suffer from being Celiac but I do quite a bit of reading about diet and alternatives for different foods. I found the below article a few days ago. It's not aimed at solely gluten free products but does have several gluten free ideas in there:

http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/nutrit...arbs/5010.html

Hope it helps.

I don't eat wheat or gluten, although not a diagnosed coeliac. I don't find it too difficult to vary my diet. Gluten free pasta and noodles are fine for me, rice can be varied with risotto rice, paella rice, brown rice, potatoes including sweet potatoes...

A lot of the gluten free bread is much better now but still quite expensive. I tend to keep a loaf in the freezer for those toast cravings!

I think as long as you vary your diet and eat lots of fruit and veg, then a coeliac diet can be fine.

I registered with a new doctors surgery yesterday and they are sending me for blood tests so i assume thats to test for coeliac disease, and i saw something yesterday that they can also test for wheat intolerance using a blood test too.

One of the conditions that determines the outcome of the test though is that you have to carry on eating gluten/wheat for at least 6 weeks before the test

My g/f has had it suggested to her that she may be gluten intolerant so we've been eating a gluten free diet for a couple of weeks (she does all the cooking). Been absolutely fine finding things to eat, and I actually like gluten free noodles more than the other ones!

I cheat though, because I still eat toast and Weetabix

Most difficult thing was going out to a restaurant last week. Had no idea what might have gluten in it and had to play it mega safe. Even asked the waitress if the ice cream had gluten in!

people that have bad cases of it have to even check lip balm and make up etc.
