Well done Revenged! That's probably, no that's definitely the best nutrition/running-related post I've ever read. Fantastic! (But I think that there may be several people out there who now want you shot for heresy, blasphemy and nutritional treason! ).
So much wisdom from one so young Mr P

Well I can live with this, and most of the time I actually do

Some comments I agree with, some I don't...

Look at elite runners, and look at their diets. Pedestrian has obviously done brilliantly in his 'running career' on his self-confessed 'diet that leaves a lot to be desired', but I don't know anyone else in Ped's situation, and I'd still contest that Ped could well have ran better on an improved diet.

Yes the majority of people are slower than the elites because of their vastly reduced training load and intensity; and people will improve their running through improved/increased training, but a nutritionally sound diet supplements the training incredibly - and it's not just about running performance, we're talking about weight control and general well-being too.

I agree with this. Regardless of whether a better diet will improve your running (I am not that strict on my diet and am sceptical that my times would improve dramatically if I were a lot stricter), it's not a good idea to think "I can eat what I want". Personally, I eat chocolate sweets and consume alcohol in moderation because I want to minimise my risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, among other things. You can be a good runner, of perfect weight and generally appear very fit, but still be clogging your arteries and developing fat around your organs if you eat crap. Also, if you eat too much of the sweet stuff your teeth will eventually fall out :P

Cheers for the tips, i will take them on board. Firstly i just want to get back on track with cutting the crap out and eating more fruit etc, then i will look at things in more depth. Never really been well up on healthy eating, i have put half a stone on though over last month or couple weeks and it is really getting to me. So i need to take action with my eating and get back on track with running aswell as losing this body fat that i can feel.

fast runners are fast because they go out and run further, for longer and more often than slower ones - some people run ~100 miles every week !...

i think the role of nutrition is overrated... in my opinion people should concentrate on running more rather than thinking they cannot eat nice foods - like chocolate, crisps and sweets - if they want to get better at running... if you run enough they you can easily burn this off and trust me you do need to eat a lot if you want to run a lot... as long as you have adequate fuel for the run and are not dehydrated then this is all you need...
I think that a good healthy diet will improve your overall health wellbeing and your performance. Surely this is something worth promoting

Whether you burn off the calories from eating junk food isnt the point, I think that fitness, sport and good nutrition go hand and hand and should be promoted on a forum like this! Im not saying live a life of restriction...hell..im just about to tuck into a chocolate muffin and a late myself

Ok, OK I took the bait

Dont you always

I think revenged has a point. Once you are clocking 100 miles a week or running marathons nutrition is essential. If you run 15? Miles a week then you can do that on your normal food intake.

If you then want to improve your fitness more then watch the snacks/alcohol.

S_Jack:
I am not sure what you consider healthy but it is very clear that what I consider healthy is not what a lot of people here do... If I'm completely honest I'm genuinely shocked by some of the people here with what they consider to be 'healthy'... It seems to me that there are many people here with an unhealthy obsession with the quantity, type and amount of food they eat and with their weight... If you think this is an aspirational way to live then go ahead but I am very very very far from being convinced... I think that all you need for a good run is adequate fuel so you don't run out of energy and enough water so you are not dehydrated - simple as!...

Hrun:
I am not sure what you meant... I never said or implied that nutrition was only important for marathon runners and people who run ~100 miles a week. ... Other than eating more carbs to get more fuel I don't think you need any more 'nutrition' if you run ~100 miles a week than if you ran 15 miles a week...

revenged. As ever I may not have worded it perfectly. Essentially I agree with you. That's all

I have really been struggling lately with my energy levels and really stuggling with my running. I run first thing in the morning, and have started having a slice of toast with jam on before running. It helps, but I still struggle. Not sure where I am going wrong. My meals for the last two days are

Weds

Before run - slice of toast with jam

Breakfast - brans flakes

Mid morning banana and sml bunch grapes

lunch cheese salad roll and yogurt

afternoon - apple and nectarine

evening meal salmon new potatoes broccoli carrots and sweet potatoes

Thurs

Breakfast - bran flakes

Mid morning banana and bowl of strawberries

lunch tuna salad roll and yogurt

afternoon - apple and two satsumas

evening meal - pasta bake with cheese and bacon

natural yogurt with chopped apple

Still found running very hard this morning, really stuggled. Been drinking two litres of water a day.

Any advice on my diet would be appreciated

Thanks

Karen

Great to see you back on the forum karen, your absence had been noticed!!!

Sorry to hear you're struggling with energy levels, though I guess this could be due to a whole number of reasons, including possibilities that extend beyond your diet... how are you sleeping for example?

Your diet seems fairly healthy, my first reaction was to think maybe you weren't eating enough, but then as a female and being a LOT lighter you should be eating less than I would expect to, lol! Best of luck, hopefully someone else can shed a little more light on the situation?!
