I also love my classic rock, prog rock and metal - the old school metal like Megadeth, Sepultura, etc.

See what I keep coming back to in discussions like this is don't rule anything out. everybody will have favourites, probably coming from what you hear at a particular age, if you say punk, for anybody my age nothing is gonna beat the thrill of hearing Anarchy In The UK the week it came out, but still I can get a kick out of my son's excitement at a new track from a current punk/metal band. Rock / Run on.

Rancid are by far the best modern punk band. Green Day, punk? Come on, "Wake me up when September ends" never had any punk riffs in it. They're slightly too eclectic to be the best punk band ever.

We seem to have here, an almost distinct division between "Punk" and "Metal"...

...But can anyone define either?

well that was debated even at the time, certainly promoted as punk, but dismissed by some as too old and/or accomplished. I liked them anyway, and I don't think there's much point in getting too hung up on genres. If it does it for you, fine.

Definitely did when I was in my late teens
Apart from a couple of songs which I hear maybe once a year I haven't listened much to them in a long time.

I guess I haven't got a clue what Punk is

I'd have to agree there. Aren't "genres" dominated to a large extent by an element of "fashion"; a set of rules/guidelines that are supposed to dictate how members of a specific genre look and behave?

I'm guessing that if the entire works of any band said to belong to, say, "Genre-X" were scrutinized deeply enough; there would be certain aspects of the music that could be deemed to belong outside of that genre.
