I did a shift for a NHS Primary Care Trust for a few weeks.

Bit mixed really. On the one hand they work incredibly hard and no one ever hears about it. On the other it's easy to see how big organisations can just waste money without thinking about it.

Mrs S and I run a Cub Pack in our spare time (what there is left of it with four kids in the house). We have so many really good friends through this and with them all being like minded it means that you are part of a fantastic community with friends all around that you all have mutual respect for.

Life like it should be. Hooray for volunteers!

...and I doubt sending young lads out to knock on doors to find jobs would be acceptable these days...sign of the times.

My mum wouldn't let me do it, even then. She'd send me back the following week with 10 bob and a note explaining why she didn't think it was appropriate......
Funny thing was, I used to travel to cubs on the bus on my own to get there. I guess that when there were conductors on the buses it wasn't considered a danger

I'm not sure it would be unacceptable. It's not really dangerous or anything like that.

I think it happens much less often because with all the job websites, and the tech'd up jobcenters it's pretty easy to see what's on offer without the effort of moving around.
The smaller shops around here still use the "wanted: ... apply within" signs in the windows.
