Only thing he did wrong was not smearing himself in goose fat before he went in.

I didn't watch the Martin Clunes one - did he do the same/similar in that?

I must be the wrong age. I'm too young to have seen the Leonard Rossiter version and had other things to do than watch the Martin Clunes one.
As I see it the gist of the story was man is bored with his monotonous life and decides to kill himself by walking into the sea? Is that right? Is there anything in between? Or was it that you see him walking into the sea but really he could have turned up in South America with a load of dosh and a bevvy of bimbos?

I am being dim this morning!
So did Reggie Perrin have the right idea?
1. In ending his life? No of course not. The good thing about being in a rut is that its not likely to go on for ever and things will get better eventually
2. In making a new life for himself? Maybe. But its a bit cowardly in not facing up to things
3. In returning home (in disguise)? I'd say no here too. Once you've got so far down one path, sometimes it should be impossible to turn round and go back to your old life, especially if you expect everything and everyone to be as it/they were before.
Blimey Steve. Its a bit of a deep question!

Kind of. Im all for a bit of dramatic reinvention. Im leaving my job where Im a senior manager in a big company, taking a big paydrop, and moving to the back of beyond to start a new career at the bottom.
My boss/company owner thinks Ive lost my mind. Maybe I have. He suggested that its ones duty to be bloody miserable and stressed out of your mind at work and that to pursue a better quality of life for less money is lazy, the easy way out. I say thats b*lls and a crap attempt at amateur psychology designed to manipulate me into being instrumental in him becoming even more rich. So, Caithness is my cleansing sea but I hope its got a Netto.

Your boss will probably end up having a heart attack in his early 50s and on his death bed wonder if the money was all worth it. Good on your for chasing happiness and contentment over money. I know of a guy that gave up a well paid office job to train as a maker of medieval weapons and other paraphranalia in the highlands of Scotland. Makes only enough to live on, but just loves the fact he is his own boss, doing something he loves and gets to live in a beautiful and serene environment. Has done wonders for his health and family life.

Good for you Vaughan, sounds rather wonderful! I wonder if your boss really believes that- I bet he's as jealous as all hell.
PS I think the line "Caithness is my cleansing sea but I hope it's got a Netto" is rather wonderful too!
