Had a 'bad running day' in Reykjavik. I think due to the gusty winds and 13C, my legs tightened up. At that point, despite having plenty of 'go' left at 20k, my knees were getting very painful. By 26k, no amount of stretching could get me back into a running pace. I did, however manage the last 16k at a brisk march, despite that the winds picked up when the heavy rains began.

I met davie on the course, who was good company for a couple of K. He left me behind and I hope HE, at least, managed a good time. I finished in 05:03, which I guess reflects my little 'ordeal'.

The whole day was so BAD, that I can actually *already* look back and laugh. The 16k of walking was bitter, though. I met another man walking who was a 16 marathon veteran, who went through the same thing as me today. He wasn't very good company, perhaps understandably.

So, there will have to be a next time, I think. Reykjavik didn't go at all to plan, and I can't just give up now after the miles and miles of training.

Thanks to all you well-wishers out there!

Well done for finishing. Is the city a nice place to stay?

Time to start thinking of the next one

Reykjavik is nice, but feels quite small in a way. The marathon coincides with 'culture night', so the hotels are pretty booked up.

Culture night was good fun, with nice fireworks to top off the 'official' festivities. I was too tired to enjoy the city-wide post-party. Though it was 1 in the morning Sthlm time, so it isn't so strange that I'm bushed, maybe.

Hi Andrew,

Was good to meet you during the race, sorry to hear about the trouble with your knees.

In general the run went pretty well to plan for me, I ran the first half in 2:02 and crossed the line in 3hrs 59. Was constantly keeping my pace in check so whilst the 1st half was a bit slow I think it paid dividends towards the end.

I found miles 18-20 pretty tough, for some strange reason i was looking forward to 20miles as this was where I was told the race really started.

Not really sure if I hit the wall as such, definately struggled a bit as the wind and rain picked up but my pace seemed to be fairly steady - think all the pre-race carb drinks did the trick.

Was a great feeling coming round the last corner, i actually crossed the line at 3:59:57 so was 3 seconds within my goal of sub 4hrs which felt pretty good.

Legs are feeling a bit stiff but nothing major, looking forward to training again and thinking about a half marathon in glasgow in 2 weeks - not sure if this is to soon though?

Good luck with your next marathon!

Well done davie on reaching your target time. Sound like the conditions weren't the best.

The conditions werent too bad, just got a bit bad at the end coming round the coast - wasnt especially warm throughout mind you

What do you think about the recovery time, is a 1/2 marathon wise in a couple of weeks?

Hell yeah!

Hi,

I have summarized my post-mara rehabilitation on this thread...

Stuck with dodgy knee?

I definitely want to do another marathon. Only question is which one?!? I think I'd like to do the Berlin marathon. I like Berlin a lot, and I hear it's an easy one! Flaaaaaat...
