New York - Race Report

Well I completed my first marathon in New York on Sunday, it was a really great experience. My time was 4:20:45, slower than I'd hoped but the course was much harder than I expected, those bridges are a killer. My half marathon split was 1:52, and I felt strong, but between the long drag up Manhattan and the loop through the Bronx over 2 bridges the wheels really fell off. However the crowd and the day was great and I'll be back.

Looking back my training was ok to get me round and for half marathon distance, but I should have done more speed and endurance training. But I've got the bug and I'm planing on doing another marathon next year, Stockholme looks good.

New York is fantastic, I'd not been before. The people around the course were great, the buzz at the start was like nothing I've experienced sports-wise, people were clapping and hi-fiving us, and when I was struggling at the end everyone was very supportive. My legs are still sore and my left foot is aching, but I haven't done any serious damage.

Stockholme is looking good for next year, it's at the end of May so plenty of time for recovery and training, has anyone on hear done it?

Fantastic, well run! So glad you got out there and enjoyed the whole experience!

Do you plan on doing a different overseas marathon a year? Sounds like a great way of seeing the world a little differently

Stockholm looks very nice - I fancied doing that one myself, but what about joining us at Edinburgh instead?!!

Well done - it looked a bit breezy!

Wow. This sounds fab.

I'd love to travel the world doing marathons.
Do some people try & do just that, & race every country's marathon?
Do people usually organise going independantly, or with a "package" deal going specifically to the race?
I've seen ads in running mags where you can get a package that will drive you to the race, etc. Expensive though.....

Very well done... good effort and what a place to do your first ever in. I guess it was combined with a holiday so did you have your wife/girlfiriend/friends* supporting you at all?

Well done Dan, I watched it live on Eurosport and it even looked hilly on TV, must have worse again out there and I heard it was quite windy also. Everything after this should seem like a doddle.
