Forgot to say, mo, did you find the start a bit congested? There were quite a few bottle necks on the course and some hazards I didnt expect i.e. a metal pole laying flat on the path just up from the Post Sorting Office and the Council trailer on the exit from the park just after the start!
A couple of times I was just getting in to my pace and I had to slow right down due to too many people trying to squeeze through a gap......didnt they expect as many people to take part in the run?
No portaloos that i can remember. I had a chat with the Harriers as well and agree they were really nice. The Lady even remembered me and gave me support as i went past where she was marshaling, they always seem to place in competitions as well so hopefully the whole club is as nice. There was the odd bit of congestion and i found that i was with quite a bunch of people until i went to the BP. It didnt really cause me that much bother but i was really surprised to see the pole not fenced off or anything. I can see how the odd bit could cause difficulty with pacing though.
Really i didnt find the hills that bad (apart from through the subway). Nothing that made me wish for a flatter course. Dundee here we come. (maybe).
Since your in Musselburgh I would say go for the Edinburgh half for your first one, its a brilliant course and it was my first 1/2 marathon this year. It got me hooked on that sort of running
Did the Dunfermline Half Marathon today, and am still on cloud 9!
I agree with the other comments - it was a really fun day. It was my first 'half' and I was aiming for 1, 42ish. Ended up doing much better than I expected (1,36,39), so I am ecstatic!! Wish I could learn to drink on the run though - everyone else seems to find it natural, but I just can't do it!
Thanks to the organisers and friendly fellow runners - it was a day to remember for me.
Well done Owain and SuperSian. They are times I dream about at the moment, my chip time confimed 2.20.19. Owain that is so close to sub 2 hours, its easily within your grasp now. JamboKaren go for it. I had been away for the last 3 months with only 30 minutes allowed on the treadmill for training. Also when i got back I did 11k which boosted my confidence slightly but both myself and my mate were really worried about completing the distance. It turned out it was my legs that actually went tired and not my lungs which has now given me a real booster.
The thing I have learnt though is its so different from training, the words of encouragement, the other runners, (the carb gels) all help to push you along those extra miles. Its a strange feeling I keep wanting to grab people and tell them all about it.
Edited to add - getting lapped by the winner just before the turn around was a bit of a low but my god could they run.
