Great Edinburgh Run
Is anyone doing this? I'm undecided as doing Loch Ness 10k previous week , going to see how I feel after Great Scottish 10 k on Sunday then decide seems a good opportunity to do a 10k in Edinburgh that doesn't just focus on Holyrood Park (not that I'm knocking Holyrood Park its a great place)

I'm also thinking of doing the Kilomathon the week before as well, sure you'll be fine!

Just having a look at the course for this one and I'm a bit confused. When you click the courses picture right at the bottom of the page you get a map which takes you round the meadows and landmarks, but if you click "the courses" in the navigation list the map shows you going up and round regent road?
Anyone know which is the right one?

Well the one that goes up Regent Road has 2012 in the file name, whereas the other one has 2011 in the name (and was also the course used in 2010). I think they may have changed the course for this year and haven't updated that link in the bottom right
That's a shame if true. The old course took you around much more of the city, and this new one is even hillier now that you run all the way down the hill towards Duddingston, only to turn around and run straight back up it again.

I see the file name now.
What a disappointment they've cut out loads of the landmarks and made a lot of it so that your just doubling back on yourself. I see hill reps in my near future

They sent an email out last week that talked about a "modified course". Really disappointed about this as I was hoping to beat a previous time and I don't like courses that go back on them self.

The worst part IMHO is the run up Queens Drive at the start, even more so than the last hill. I used to do it every week and it's tough, and nearly always a strong wind against you. If that's the case on the day I'm going to pace myself for that first mile because after that it's easy.
The final stretch after mile 6 should be easier because there'll be no headwind, and the crowds will keep us going.
If you're looking for good hill repeats, and you live near Arthurs Seat, look for the steps near the 2KM marker. Run up those Rocky style, and jog back around. 6 repeats is a good goal for a session! If you can do those you can attack any route in Edinburgh with gusto!

Edinburgh is good to run around, it's a great run! Big sweeping hill to start with but once that is out the way, there is only really one other climb and that is over with in a quarter of the time the first hill is!
i see you're from Blyth.. the one in Northumberland?

I like your style Dire.... I have had the kilomathon booked in since i finished the spring event. If you havent ran it before Edinburgh based guys and gals you should be thinking about it for next year it is a great event well set up etc plus the extra 3.5km makes it all the more challenging.
Anyway back to the Great Edinburgh Run, i have heard rumours that it has a steep incline to begin with but evens itself back out thought the course. I havent had a look at the route yet, theres no surprise in that, its like open a cristmas present early ha
I have to say though i am slightly disappointed in the cost of the Great Run it was on par with the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow a few weeks back but it is double the cost of the Kilomathon. Im hoping that we have a similar atmosphere to Glasgow as bands and acts lined the streets and they had a great set up in Glasgow Green at the finish line. I am hoping Edinburgh doesnt disappoint

Cool, I'm originally from Seaton Sluice! The drive to edinburgh is a bit of a bitch due to the single carriage way between Alnwick and Berwick.
You'll enjoy Edinburgh!

Glad I read this thread just now. Had been planning on signing up this evening. Having seen the new route I've decided against it.
Did this race (my first ever) in 2008 - start and finish in the Meadows (great); 2009 start and finish on George IV Bridge (a mess); 2010 start and finish at Holyrood (much better). Unfortunately last year I wasn't well and dropped out after 1km. I'd hoped to get around it this year despite the Loch Ness marathon the week before. But the new route is completely uninspiring. I'll give it a miss and hope they come up with something better next year.

This year I have enjoyed the Portobello Promathon (4miles) and Great Winter Run (5k) but hated the Rock'n'Roll half marathon having withdrawn after only 3.5miles of hideous weather. Training for the Edinburgh marathon has been sporadic - I've not done enough really long runs but have run further in the first 4 months of the year than before so hope that will count.

Glad I checked this thread. Really enjoyed the Great Edinburgh Run last year even though I was injured but I really don't like the look of the modified route at all. I won't be doing it this year now.
