In Search of Trainers

Hi all,

I was wondering if there might be one of you out there that can help me in my search for a pair of trainers that don't leave me with shin splints!

I have just retired a pair of Nike Shox that I bought in the states and are unable to replace in this county and typically they were th esingle most perfect pair of trainers I have found. The mainfactor is that they are for moderate pronation but have a lot of arch support.

Can I find anything even close, nope.....I am now nearly £200 down in my search and have knocked up shins to boot. I have tried recomended shoes from specialist stores but can find nothing with the degree of arch support that I think I need.

The reason I am focusing on the arch support is that I have noticed that if my legs hurt during a run rolling slightly on to the outer edge of my foot allows me to run in comfort.

Any suggestions are most most welcome!!!

Hi EmmaC

When you say a specialist store, do you mean a specialist running shop ?. I have / do suffer with this and I went to a running shop and they got me on a treadmil to see how I ran and then we went through a large amount of different shoes until I found one I could run up the road and felt comfortable.

Best thing I've ever done.

If you do this, best to take your old pair that work for you so they can see.

yup, been to running stores and yes I am now going back with the pair that work, despite already being through this already.

They seem fine then at first, then a few weeks in all hell breaks lose...

Have you tried getting a pair of Orthics (sp) fitted into the shoes for added support ?

Sorry Granty - I just realised that my response was a little curt, apologies I was rushing before my boss came over!!

Orthics - No I have no idea about these, could you go into a little more detail. The one thing I did think about was changing the insole

EmmaC, had not realised so not to worry, look at http://www.straws.com/orthoses.htm - they are basically inserted either above or below the insole of the running shoe and provide extra cushioning.

I got mine from a physio as they were the first people I went to see when I had my shinsplints, so that might be a good place to go, you can also get custom ones made up to fit the individual foot (extremely expensive).

When I got mine, they fixed the shinsplints straight away, but I had to stop wearing them as I was getting very bad blisters on the arches of my foot.

Hope this helps.
