I have Hilly off road socks. They're extremely comfortable and I've never had a rub with them ... I'd recommend them to anyone ... even if you only do road work!

ruined a pair of my running socks tonight - pulled them on a little enthusiastically and tore them at the heel

Mind you, they've lasted me 3 years

I've only ever worn my normal socks while running, never had blisters and I've never seen the attraction or point of specialist sports socks.

I wear 100 mile socks for long runs and races... To be honest I see no real difference between specialist socks and normal cotton ones, but the double-layer ones probably do prevent some chafing. Enough people have said good things about them for me to want to try them.

I find the proper running socks so much more comfy, and they have a much better fit around the toe area. I found with normal socks that the material would bunch up around teh toe area and cause me grief (especially on longer runs) so decent (allbeit expensive) running socks are a godsend for me!

Obviously that's just my experience and seemingly not the norm

I have 4 pairs of Brooks Adrenaline Pro socks, never had a blister wearing them in 2 years now. Also just got a pair of Sole socks to try out. For an ankle sock they are good and don't seem to slip down even on quicker efforts.

For road racing I'd always use the adrenalines though. Just because they give a tiny bit of compression and feel supportive as they are structured and are anatomical.

In triathlons I use vasaline on ym insole and around the heel, and that's good enough for me after the first couple of tri's of the season!
