Trainer Choices

Hi,

First post so I'll tell you a little about myself. Used to swim a lot and like to go to the gym for weights and sometimes do a bit of running. Wanting to start doing more running than swimming soon though. It's hard finding anything useful via google these days with all the online shops but thankfully I found this runners forum!

Needing a little advice on my next trainer purchase, they need to be sturdy enough to withstand weights (not crazy power lifter stuff but like a 100kg squat for example) as my last pair of admittedly cheap Nike Air trainers the air bubble burst and are a bit useless.

My running technique isn't that great so need a bit of support in them and also want to be able to run through mud, sleet, puddles and other messy stuff lol. Here's a few I've looked at so far,

Asics. Gel Empire II Road Running Shoe

Asics. Gel Cumulus 8 Autmun/Winter 2006 Road Running Shoe

Mizuno Wave Nemesis Road Running Shoe

Reebok Premier Trinity Road Running Shoe

EDIT: I did link to them from the sportshoes. com website but not allowed linking until after 15 posts.

I'm wanting to keep the budget around or under £40.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Welcome to the forum

first thing to do is go to a specialist running shop to have your gait analysed they will be able to tell you the correct type of shoe for you .

The shoe manufacturers are upgrading running shoes all the time but a lot of the old models are still available and around your price bracket.

I can't comment on the shoes you mentioned as i run in SAUCONYpro grid triumph 5

They are a fantastic road shoe but not much good off road also with this particular brand you need to buy them at least a half size bigger and on some models a whole size ,hence the need to try some on

As for withstanding weight training again this is something for you to discuss with the shop

good luck with everything

Take it easy

Howdy Mr King! As has been said, really you should be looking at going to a specialist running shop (not somewhere like JJB etc...), whilst you obviously have an idea of what you want from your trainer, it unfortunately doesn't mean that any of the trainers you have looked at will suit your running style.

Why does it matter? Not all that many runners have a perfect stride, a specialist running shop will be able to see how you run and what level of support, cushioning and/or motion control you require - ultimately helping to stop you having to posting on here saying how you've developed pain in your shins/knees/calves

As for weightlifting, I'd just use some normal sports shoes rather than running shoes in the gym as the running shoes tend to have a large chunk of cushioning on the bottom. If budget doesn't allow that then you should be okay with most trainers, just avoid ones with things that would have the ability to break (such as air pockets, 'shocks' etc).

Hope that helps a little

Agree with the above posts, get yourself along to a specialist store to get yourself properly kitted out. I'm sure someone can recommend a good store near to you.

The shoes that you have highlighted are all very different types of shoe, some are designed to help control the footstrike and some are not. It is good to have a budget but at the end of the day, shoes are the one essential bit of kit for running so you shouldn't take shortcuts on them!!
