left foot differnt from right

Okay I ran in my new asics and the wear on the initial pattern and help from a friend (following and watching footstrike) has indicated what I was beginning to think. My right foot overpronates, I have wear on the outer heel and inner front edge. My left foot lands centrally, all the wear is at the back in the centre and in the middle at the front. My left leg is the one that has always had the knee problem. I dont now if this is related but I also had a clicking left hip when I was born. This kind of fits in with the slapping of the left foot I have sometime had.

What do people do when each foot is different ?. Which should take priority?.

I don't know, but I have the same problem. My right foot overpronates, but think my left is ok. I don't have trouble with knees, I just get a numb right foot on some days. I now have Ascics and have insoles and gel inserts in them and this seems to stop the numb foot. It seems worse when I've ran over 3 miles and is on cross country type surfaces or hill work.

Have you had a gait test at a specialist shop, they should be able to advise you?

I had gait analysis carried out that said I overpronate on both. I then got a knee injury. During the injury I went to have my patella tracking checked out and had a really good review. The guy said that he didnt think it was too much cause for concern but made me watch a video of my left foot. It pointed straight ahead through the swing, flicked at the last second and back before landing. It was impossible to say at the time if this was down to the injury or not. I am always aware of my left knee, and I always have some feeling in it but no injury or swelling for a while now. The unfortunate thing was the the alaysis guy wasnt sure about where to go with my left foot.

I'm quite imabalanced really... my right knee drops inwards which has caused uneven loads on my leg muscles... also my right foot tends to overpronate a little more than my left.

I think/believe as time goes on, and we learn to run longer distances and run faster, our running economy naturally improves which means we have a more efficient gait, with less overpronation etc...

In response to what you should do momorris, I'd imagine one of the best things would be custom orthotics, which would give you the necessary level of pronation control for each foot. Though I expect these to be quite expensive... I tihnk your best bet would be to ask a specialist for their opinion!
