Beginner Shoe Advice!!

Hello all. I am a pretty much a running novice - except for school when I was 15!

I am now 31 and want to start running, mainly cross country but some road too. I have read up on trainers and have come to the conclusion that Asics Kayano or Nike Triax Structure are the best.

I am worried about knee impact, although I have never had knee trouble before, I haven't done that much exercise!

Can someone advise me on which show to go with? I have no idea and nor did the spotty oiks in the sports shop!

HELP!

Best bit of advice you will get will be to pop along to your nearest specialist running shop (not JJB, Sports Direct etc). Get them to watch you running, either on treadmill or in the shop and they will be able to tell you which shoes are the most suitable for your particular running style. Try on as many shoes as you can that suit your running style and then pick the ones which fit and feel the best.
If you aren't sure where the nearest specialist is to you, let us know your vague whereabouts (don't need to be too precise!!) and someone should be able to recommend somewhere suitable?
The shoes you have mentioned are both very good shoes, but how do you know they suit you?Nothing beats trying them on in person, what suits one person might not suit the next person.

I'd definately agree with sensible... there's no BEST shoe, other than the shoe that best suits your running style (gait) and is as comfy as possible. You'll only find that out by trying them on in person

Yea, I went to get my gait analysed on the weekend and spent over an hour in the shop trying on six pairs of shoes. I'm sure that all six pairs where great shoes but the ones I came out with were best for my running style.

Hi Singularity, thank you very much fr replying to my question and welcoming me.

A bit of luck, I am in Gloucestershire! 20 mins north of Cheltenham. Can you recommend somewhere for me to buy shoes? I understand what you are saying about my running style and not going to the hideous sports stores and being served by someone apathetic spotty little oik!

I look forward to your suggested shop!

Best wishes

Fiona

LittleBunny - There are a couple of options for you in terms of running shops. The best (in my opinion) is Runaround which is just above Worcester. Video gait analysis and the among the best staff I have met, they will take their time to make sure you get the right shoes for you. Worth making the effort to travel over there.
Alternatives are Gloucester Sports in Worcester St, Gloucester. Don't have video gait analysis but the owner has been in the business for 30 years and knows his stuff.
Or there is Up and Running on High Street in Cheltenham. They have video gait analysis but a limited range of shoes to look at.Don't know the staff in there so can't comment on them.
Hope this helps?
