6.29 for me, but that's calculated off a 1.5 mile run time, so hopefully I should be able to shave a few seconds by doing just the mile itself I would love to get under 6 minutes!

I found out by accident, not through trying, that I run faster on the road (Treadmill blew up on that day). Personal best 9:17 (I ran for 1.6 miles for 15 minutes). Could probably run faster than that if just running a mile and if I was specifically trying to run fast.
On the treadmill I run for 30 minutes and average 12:04.
When I first started running I was so p*ss weak I could only run 0.7 mile in 15 minutes and couldn't continue. That's a speed of 21:26 per mile. LOL oh dear! (Note: at the time I could walk faster than that, I was just really really bad at running!)

Most people can run faster on the road... probably something to do with the fact that tready running is sooooooo tedious, and also that you usually have better air quality outside

What would a flat out mile be in comparison to say a 5K mile split (ie. how much quicker would it be)?
I only had time for a 3 mile run on Tuesday morning so tried to do it relatively fast (for me). It was only today that I looked at the splits - and it was pretty obvious I just went straight into it without any warm-up:
Mile 1 - 6:44
Mile 2 - 6:22
Mile 3 - 6:08
What do you think would be a decent target for a single mile (with warm-up!)
ps. don't want to enter the 6:08 as an official time - would rather do it properly

Well, my fastest mile split in a 5k is around 5:26 and my best single mile race PB is 5:13. Now I reckon I can knock at least 10 seconds off that, so I'd say take around 20-25 seconds off your best mile split in a 5k. So maybe you should be aiming for around 5:40 - 5:50.

My fastest mile is 7.21, but that was calculated from my new Garmin within a 4 mile run, so I would think if I ran the mile on it's own I could do better. I will try it out sometime.

I know if you ran the 1 mile on its own you would get a faster time! I have done a 1 mile warm up and then turn around and give it your all. I reckon you have a sub 7 mins in you.

I've only been running for 9 weeks but I thought I'd have a go at a fast mile today whilst at the gym. Managed it in 8'49 - nothing spectacular but my own personal best and I now have a target to beat. That was on a treadmill with a 1% incline.

4 laps around the track is a metric mile.

Mine is 5:31, although I did do a 5:23 before finding out the course was too short. rubbish.
The problem i have with the fast mile is that it is very difficult to run any further if you absolutely pound through the mile. This then restircts your running for that day. it certainly makes the rest of the 5km very very tough (this is only in training though)

Back in January this year I did 11:19 for a mile. Last Friday I managed 5:57 (unofficial). Just keep at it and before you know, you should see a great improvement.

if you look a few metres before the finish line there's an arc'd line going from lane 1 round to the outside lane... that's the 1mi start line. there's a few metres before crossing the finish line, then it's 4 complete laps.

That is great, huge huge improvement, nice one.
I have recently done a 1 mile time trial and now shaved a mere few seconds off and got myself a 7:09, well chuffed.
