Just run the best you can and use whatever time you finish in as a benchmark. Then next race you have a time to beat.

Also remember that some people are more suited towards longer distances so they won't be able to thrash out a quick 10k but it doesn't mean their not as accomplished a runner. I did a 48:00 10k which isn't fast but you're always going to get some ahead of you and some behind.

I DIDN'T DO IT ! ......... and now I'm feeling extremely disappointed in myself! I woke up on Sunday morning to the worst storm I'd seen in months and somehow managed to talk myself out of going! I'd really been looking forward to it too! There's another reasonbly local one coming up in a couple of weeks though so I'm aiming to do that one .... hoping for better weather this time though!

I keep seeing this thread title and have come to a decision.

A respectable time for a 10k is whatever you run it in, as long as you can say hand on heart you put your all into it.

don't sweat about it...

i've been running now nine months and never done a 10k race...

i also pulled out of a 10k last month and it was the best decision i've ever made...

i know that i can run a 10k race with ease but i have lost my enthusiasm for races...

it depends what your motivation is for running...

i have done well already and so i don't feel like i have much to prove to myself anymore...

with other people, i'm not so sure...

i know someone who never shuts up about completing the london marathon and it really annoys me...

the ironic thing is that he is rubbish and acts like he is better than everyone...

even said to me that i can't be that good if i could 'only run 5 mile races'!

seriously what a nob...

this is not the first person like this, i have met a few like that that have put me off ever running long distances races for life...

if you want to start running a long distance races then do it for the correct reasons...

so many people use it as a means to seek attention, awe and glory from others it really saddens me sometimes ...

Well said.

Let us always enter races for the one true and valid reason...
