I'm also still fairly new to running - and am only upto about 12-16 miles per week now (4 miles per session). My own experience was that, at one stage, I tried to include one speed session a week, and found that completely wiped me out for the next few days. So for the moment I've cut the speed sessions out again, and am concentrating instead on just building up some distance. I've decided to get back to speedwork later on again once I've built up some distance. Result: I'm really slow but that will have to do for now.
I guess everybody is different, and it's important to listen to your own body.
