How can I boost my fitness for double day events

this is not related to triathalons or dualthons at all BUT situation is similar?

Or is it...Interested on peoples opinions.

For my job I walk around the city centre 5-6hrs per day with a 10kg? backpack on.

I notice that since I started this job I CANNOT play football at night, my legs are gone!!! This is right? I even eat a lot and keep pace slow during day and refuel/rest before football.

So say I get home 430pm and play football at 7pm...ive been walking since 11am...


Is it impossible for me to get fitness for football? I noticed on my day off I was playing much better and fresh I scored countless goals at 5-a-side and ran about all over the pitch.
Then take tonight I'd been working/walking all day and only managed 1 goal and could hardly even run albeit it was very hot and sunny today also..

its just gonna be impossible for me to play a top condition/level due to my job? Not much else I can do?

Also bear in mind I'm pretty unfit for football as it is even if ive rested all day..Im fine for walking about but sprinting exhausts me and almost impossible after walking all day, my legs are so heavy and tired.

No insult to walkers, but I don't think walking around all day in a job-related way is going to make you fit for short sprints, threshold and anaerobic bursts that is likely to characterize football. I think you need your own football-oriented training (and someone else was asking about this recently). That you say sprinting exhausts you but (in effect) zone 1 or 2 level exercise is fine is evidence for this.

Yes I know this and what I was trying to say thanks.

I am therefore kinda asking that will a full day of 5-10mile walking with backpack on effect my ability to perform later on.

I know I am not fit in general but even if I train for soccer will the early day walking still prevent me from playing at anywhere near potential later in the day?

Even if I get fit I mean, I'm not fit as it is but played a lot better and wasn't so tired when I played on my day off.

If you get me?

You're just not very fit, it's not rocket science and there are no shortcuts, I think you know the answer to your own question, you just need to put the effort in to improve your fitness.

yes but even if I were fit is it possible to walk around 5-10miles per day then same day play a game of soccer?

seems hard task? Or will reduce performance and energy

I thought I was pretty fit in general (180cm/72kg), was doing 50 miles a week, swimming 2x a week, some other gym *stuff* (i.e. rowing machine), playing tennis once a month etc but I was flat out after 10min of a rather intensive 5-a-side at my work's day away do.. and started to appreciate overpaid footballers (who do this 45min x 2) a bit more..

Yes, it is.. you're a living proof of that..but in order to last more than 3min you need to practise more and hours of walking is not the right type of exercise for this..

ok well thanks for all the input guys.

I guess ill just need to do 2-3 months solid related training and see what happens!

My fitness will improve and will I be able to maintain a pace after a hard days work.

We shall see!!!

Only reason ive kinda always strayed away from cardio is being a skinny lad told not to do cardio as I wanted to gain mass...So throughout my teens and early20s I was more focused on weights and eating.

Ive never been a cardio guy really only when playing sport itself but no training.

However with age ive stabilised at a good 70kg at 182cm which aint to bad though id rather another 5-10kg at least...but its decent enough to add in cardio and not care to much about bulking up atm...

When younger I wanted to gain weight not interested in cardio..I would still like to gain 5-10kg but no hurry for it. Id rather focus on cardio atm..

So you are just looking to get fitter, last longer at playing football not running.
I was skinny as a kid but now in mid 80KG and I would love to loose about 10K to make running easier . Its amazing how many guys younger than me say they can no longer run, dodgy knees. They all seemed to play 5 a side or pub football in there early adult life. Good luck. CAC

running or football causes bad knees? yep one of the guys mid 20s who played with us has quit he says his knee aches for days after playing so not worth the bother, its crazy.

Last longer at 60min games of football 5s or 7s, sometimes 90mins. MOstly 60min but with spell in goals etc...

There is a lot of sprinting obviously...

Ill still try gain weight by diet and weights wont work my legs to much though
