tah .... i just don't know... the perfect race would have been 20mins off the bike & 15mins off the run.
easy saying that now mind, how you can be sure of acheiving that even in last weekend's relatively windy conditions i don't know.

I guess a faster course would help reach that lofty target next time...Roth/IMA?

Outlaw bike course would be pretty quick on a still(er) day ... the run for some reason whilst pretty much pancake flat doesn't seem to get as fast a times as you'd expect.

(actually i think the problem with the outlaw run course is it is actually a UKA certified marathon...... so full distance rather than the random underdistance variations you tend to get!)

WOW, much respect Ed.
Quite a few from my Tri Club did Outlaw including 3 lady IM first timers and the first thing one of them said at last weeks OW swim was " Lisa you could so do it next year"........so I may be back to ask your advice!
Well done again, awesome race and great report too.

cheers... and well done to them.
IM distance is never going to be a walk in the park but the outlaw guys have done a good job the last few years putting on a great event for speedy boys (still working on it) and first timers alike!

If I were u,would have focus on cutting the running time
When I done tri's,my running time just about 1 min less,
In triathlon 40~,when my PB on fresh legs was 39.
U will be suprised, how fast can u run on tired legs, just need
To Practice it.
I found that moving from bike to run is quite hard for the legs,
But it is doable.

U can also improve the swimming.
You are a very strong cyclist....

How many years have u trained '-' ?

hi free.. thanks for the nice comments.

i started triathlon maybe 10years ago as a non-swimmer, with a diversion into ultra running on the way through so running is in theory my strongest card. this was my 7th time at the distance over the last 6years.

i agree over shorter distances 5k / 10k / half marathon i can run very close to my standalon PBs but think ironman distance is a slightly different game unless i can be a total uber-runner !

my marathon PB is only 3:15 altho the stats suggest <3 these days if i focussed on it a little (a plan for the autumn).
notice the difference in ranking for bike (123rd) and run (54th) tho, my bike is distinctly mediocre whilst the run is good, ironman distance is a BIG trade off here... unless you're trained for it going too much faster on the bike can mean a total breakdown on the run!
so really i need to be stronger on the bike but wise enough not to got flat out in order to maximise any potential improvements on the run.

my favourite quote is something like "the ironman bike leg is like the nuclear arms race, you build up a massive arsenal in training but have to have the wisdom not to use it on the day" !

still happy tho so onward & upward !

Maybe you are right about keeping the pace in the marathon
Even with all the gels & bananas it will still be very difficult
To run the marathon after 7h '_'

Just out of curiosity,
How many weely hours have u put in the months
Prior to your IM in a rough average ?

from 12 up to 20hrs for a few key peak weeks..... and yes that doesnt leave time for much else, altho this year ive had several poor training spells for various reasons so not too consistent.

I feel if I'm ever going to do one it will be Outlaw on account of the flatish bike course. I presume ( maybe wrongly) that you know or know of Andy Holgate. He trains with my Tri club and has offered to mentor me. It will be a case of just getting round within the cut off times for me though.

So what's next Ed?
