Derby Triathlon - 13th September 2009
Derby Triathlon
Will there be any other forumites at this?
I think I'm part way into being badgered into doing this. If I do compete, I'll be aiming for nothing more than a finish in front of other people.
I'll need to swim a bit beforehand as my cycling and running speeds aren't that bad.
It's a supersprint triathlon, so 400m swim, 18k cycle and 5k run.
Something different for me, I suppose!

Ooo, nice one. I will be following you with interest. I am tempted to look at a duatholon one day, swimming is not a strong point, I can only do breast stroke (but I keep getting thrown out of the pool for molestation )

My swimming is probably my weak point on this, so I thought about a duathlon. But as the swimming is 'only' 400m, I think it's very do-able.
I've not found a full list of results though, but, some of our rugby club members did this last year, results as follows...
Code:
Pos # Name (initials) # Swim # Bike # Run # Final time
290 # CM # 00:12:17 # 00:38:12 # 00:27:56 # 01:18:25
469 # YM # 00:15:12 # 00:45:04 # 00:29:18 # 01:29:34
487 # LG # 00:13:31 # 00:46:05 # 00:31:10 # 01:30:46
579 # LT # 00:13:50 # 00:55:49 # 00:43:37 # 01:53:16
I think I'd be very much nearer the back of that field. Time to dust off my trunks, get some proper cycling training done and some hills for the speed in the legs

Go Carl!
Im doing a triathlon at the weekend....................... well its a relay tri so I will be doing the running/hobbling bit. My mates are ex national schoolboy swimmer and a nearly national level cyclist so I am hoping to squander the lead they provide me with.

Good luck for the weekend Ray!
I've decided to go for it. I can easily run 5k. I can easily cycle 18k. So, I'm going to book in for a slow swim and hope to do some work on the bike and run. Once my 10k training is done, I'm going to get my lardy arse into a pool at lunchtimes and get the 400m time down.
I'll be doing this sponsored though, as it's going to be a one off event for me really. I'll be supporting 2 causes.
One is the Rugby Football Union's Injured Players Foundation. The RFU Injured Players Foundation supports people who sustain a catastrophic injury whilst playing rugby. The charity provides help and support for both players and their families in the early months of these injuries as well as in the long term and incorporates the former SPIRE Rugby Trust charity.
The other is supporting young martial artists who compete for the UK in international competitions. Currently they are looking for funding for training equipment with a view to representing Great Britain at World Championship event in Puerto Rico.
I'm going to set up the relevant sponsorship gubbins at a later date, once my nominated causes are OK with my fundraising. I don't normally do fundraising when running, but, this event is a little different for me.
Anyway - I'm now worried that I'm turning into some kind of actual athlete!

Found a training plan that I intend on following.
RW's Beginners' Triathlon Training Schedule - Runner's World Racing
Going for a swim on Friday evening to see how my swimming is - intend to do a warm up, then do 400m and assess where my time sits after that.
Eep!

I'll have a look at the report Ray
I did my swim on Friday - like a nobber, I forgot my watch, so any timing was done as an estimate as the clock in the pool area didn't have a second hand. I was about as efficient in the water as a brick. I'm sure it will come with practice though. Like I say, I'm not going to be anywhere near challenging for any place - just aiming to finish and not finish last!

Then I'm aiming for a placing. Just won't be aiming to be placed in double or single figures!

Been for a couple of swims and I'm getting back into the swing of things. Tonight loosened me up nicely from the 10k on Sunday.
Next time I go, I'm going to time myself for the 400m and see how I go.
Tomorrow night, I'm intending on doing a cycle then run, to see what that transition is like.

Hmmmm - I'm thinking people won't see a difference between my normal running and my 'just got off a bike' running!

It'll be like a scene from it's a knockout! Could get £250 from Harry Hill for it!
Kerching!
