Blimey Trin, did you roller skate or something. I wouldn't have thought you could speed up that much more

Most of my PBs were set in the early 70s
I'll never get anywhere remotely near them now.
In fact I used to racewalk and now I can't even run as fast as I used to walk
(mind you I did walk pretty fast!)

You can go quite fast walking can't you?

I perfected quite a fast "speed march" for the Paras 10.
Often use it when my back/hip is killing me when running.

I can't tell you how cross people get when I occasionally overtake them when they are running & I am walking!
They always start running faster to make sure they get back in front!

Yes walking is certainly quicker uphill at times for me these days and I can generally keep up with some runners this I think is because runners are having to lift their body weight off the ground with every stride whereas walkers are merely transferring the weight from one foot to the other.

My best times for walking are
10 miles 76-17
15 miles 1-57-30
20 miles 2-47-24

Blimey.....that's quick for walking!

What technique do you use?

Can you give me some hints, & maybe a link to a race walking technique site???

I've seen walking races at track races, is that how you walk?
That really distinctive "wiggly" walk!! (Excuse my ignorance....... don't know how to describe it!!)

I just speed march when I get tired, but need a quicker way to walk for the Paras 10.
No-one runs all of this race, (with a 35lb bergen on your back, up crazy hills. ) but I'd like to be able to walk quicker.
Think I'd feel pretty silly doing that "wiggly" walk, but who cares, as long as it's faster!

Is this your technique? That's what I meant when I said the "wiggly" walk!

Oh dear, the thought of doing this at the Paras 10, with loads of hunky Paras watching.......

As it's so fast though, it might be worth learning.

Just looked at your profile. That is mighty impressive. If you can do 10 miles in 70 minutes, you should probably be aiming for a sub 1:30 half. At the very least you should easily be able to shave some minutes off your half PB.

Thats true! When you get a new PB - don't you sometimes want to re-do all the other distances (on nice flat courses )to see what new PBs you can get in all of those too!??

I really want to do another 10 mile - I know I went past the 10 mile point on the Half-Mara at about 1hour 33.... so a good 7 mins off my PB... but that was in Brecon, and was hilly.

Trin is inspirational!

Wish I could shave 6 minutes off my 10 mile PB, as that would put me nicely under the one hour mark (the Holy Grail for me!)

It's not that easy to spot the technique at speed but if you stand with your hips level and put your right leg forward.see where it reaches on the ground. Now straighten up, lock your left leg drop your right hip and swing the right leg forward trying to put your right heel directly in front of your left foot. You'll find this will increase the length of your stride by 3 to 6 inches (dependinf on height and flexiblity. Now walking at speed you'll probably find you do around 160 paces a minute (160 x 3" = 40 feet or around
12 metres in a minute in 10 mins you're 120 metres up on your usual distance and an hour yields 720 metres further up the field for no extra effort!
It's not 'bum waggling' but hip rotation to gain extra inches on your stride length and this is achieved by dropping the hip on the leg swinging through

Go on - sock it to the paras!

So how did your running pbs compare to your race walking pbs? I'm curious as to whether there was a significant difference.

Edit: just checked your profile and see your 10mile walking is 20 minutes slower than your running. So quite a difference.

Thanks!

You know, this is something I'm really going to look into.
I think I'll find a club that does it, just to get a couple of lessons.

The only drawback is that I'll look so bloody silly......
In front of Paras too.....
