setting my hrm - first timer

hi all,
I bought a hrm few days ago... it is a quite an old model..i think.
After reading few articles over the internet and the user manual that came with the hrm, I decided to give it a go. So I set the upper limit (75% of max heart rate) to 155 and the minimum to 120.
But that didnt work, continued to beep as I was way over the 155. so I reset it again, this time upper to 183 and lower to 175. This seems to work for me well (up-till now at-least). and the last 450 meters of yesterdays run I managed to reach 197 (sprinting). is that my max hear rate? How can I measure my max heart rate?

Is this right, am I over-training?
when should I increase my upper limit?
