What's wrong with my Garmin?
Yesterday I went for a 3 mile run and my Garmin told me my max speed was that I had run a mile in 2.1 mintues, well that is impossible, so what went wrong? My running partner had her Garmin on too and our distances weren't matching up either, mine was saying I had run half a mile less.
For info it took 10 mins for both our Garmins to find the satellites, so was that what caused mine to go wrong? I've googled for info and read the hand book, but I can't find anything about it. Any ideas?

Running is like mouthwash; if you can feel the burn, it's working.

The Garmin was taking too long to find the satelites, it took about 10 minutes, so we started our run without it. We were running through the woods.

And if the Garmin didn't get it wrong, do you want the number for UK athletics I bet you could get a wild card for 2012

also depends where you were trying to gain signal... I turn mine on and leave it on the window-sill with the GPS reciever pointing upwards, by the time I've tied my laces it's found satellite signal

We were stood outside for ages waiting for it to locate the satelite, I wonder if there was a problem with them because normally it finds them quite quick. I was just panicking incase there was something faulty with my Garmin!
So I take it I can't put the 2 minute mile down as a PB then?!

Happens to me now and then, could be sun spot activity, alien interference, weird stratospheric conditions or any number of other factors
Why not put the PB down, the 2 mile PB is 7:00 last time I looked, so we already have a 3:30 miler among us

You have to bear in mind that GPS is not guaranteed to work and the Ministry of Defence sometimes jams it. There have been times when others have used jammers.
As far as I can see from the net the MoD hadn't given notice of a planned jamming test yesterday. But don't go running with your Garmin 60 nautical miles west of Kirkwall in the next few days. ( GPS Jamming Exercise - N58° 57.4’ W003° 13.9’)

Ah well you learn something new everyday! thanks all.
Though I do have another silly question, where it say avg min mile, yesterdays run was 9min 43, which is self explainetry, but underneath it has a max, which was 6 min 03. Now does the max mean the fastest pace at one point, or does it mean I ran a whole mile in that time? My friend thought it was for the whole mile, but I think it is just at one point you were runing that pace.

thats the quickets at one point, although u can configure the screen to show av for lap, which if you have it set to auto lap per mile then it will be right
i wouldnt pay much attention to that figure it hardley ever gives u a useful number.

Max is the fastest pace at any point during the run. I'm not sure what they do in terms of ensuring its not just a blip (where connection goes and comes back) - maybe do it over a minimum distance or something. Anyway - I wouldn't read too much into that part - as main thing is average pace over a certain distance (be it mile, km, entire run or whatever).
I would say its unusual for the Garmin to take that length of time to pick up a signal unless you are surrounded by tall buildings or similar. If it is taking a bit of time I tend to switch it off and try again and it usually picks it up fine.

Was you starting a run from near the end of your last run?
I have found that if I travel a far distance from the last time I used the watch, it can take ages to relocate a satelite
