What is the best course of action when you are getting low to moderate level pain thats not a tear or strain, more overuse really .

From Richards post with the picture of a calf muscle on it I would say it is the muscle insertion for the gastocnemius on the outside of my left leg.

Im told that the foot on that left side splays out to the left when Im running or even just standing so that could be the cause.

Im limiting the distance I run to around 3 - 3.5 miles at the moment, but I could do more and Ive had the problem for the last 2 runs. It isn't that bad I just dont want to make it worse but being inexperienced I don't know if I should stop everything or just ignore it because its just a normal part of repeatedly banging your feet against a road for 30 minutes that everyone feels. Maybe buy better trainers, do certain stretches ? I have considered maybe just running shorter distances faster to try and get the same effects with less pounding till it goes away.

I wonder how long it is on average from everyones first post about how to get started to the one about what to do about the foot/calf/shin pain theyre getting

You don''t need better trainers, but you do need to ensure you have the right trainers. A trip to a specialist store to have your gait checked might be an idea.

Also consider switching to a non impact sport such as cycling or running for a couple of weeks to rest it.
