Need a bit of advice. Who would be the best person to see about the aching I get in my right calf muscle. Its fine when I am out running it’s the rest of the time it hurts. Looking at some of the other threads going to see my GP will probably be a waste of time, should I book an appointment with a physiotherapist?

physios are very good but they are expensive... the cost of a private physio is ~£45 pounds for a 45 minute appointment...

i definitely wouldn't bother for a mild sprain...

if it's painful then take go to the pharmacay and buy ibuprofen gel or heat pads...

and another thing runners...

if you ever have inflammation of joints and need to take pain killers then take the right pain killers...

anti-inflammatory pain killers (e.g. ibuprofen / aspirin) are what you want...

don't take paracetamol or co-codamol as these are only pain killers and do not reduce inflammation...

Thought so, but wanted confirmation before I get the yellow pages out and start ringing round.

Good advice, especially on the painkiller thing. I knew ibuprofen was an anti-inflammatory, didn’t know aspirin had the same effect. Paracetamol is quite a nasty pharmaceutical, I try and avoid it if I can.

I think in this instance I will seek out a physio, I’ve had some pain in the same calf muscle on and off for a while (started before I took up running). Hopefully I can get a diagnosis and enough advice from a single session to look after myself so the problem doesn’t return.

Good news on this problem. I had a dig in the yellow pages this morning and selected a physio that specialises in sporting injury. Gave him a ring and was able to get an appointment for this afternoon. So I went down there and spent 45 minutes with him. He got me to walk around a bit so he could see what was going on. Turns out I walk like a duck.... feet turned out slightly, the right one more than the left. And there it is... the problem!

The aching I have been getting is the muscle behind the shin (can’t remember its name). Apparently I am overusing this muscle to compensate for the rolling of my foot during walking and running, giving me the pain. He gave me some massage (which did hurt quite a lot) and has given me a few exercises to do, but for me just knowing what the problem is makes the cost of the session worth every penny. Now I have something to work on and can hopefully retrain myself to walk properly!

This sounds like what i've got right now.

Ever since my sports massage on Monday, I've had really bad pain in the back of my leg. I thought it was the tibialis anterior muscle but could be the calf as the pain seems to go right up. Its fine when running, but when walking, Its bad. So bad, im limping. I cant put weight on it. When i put weight on it, its when i come to bend and lift the leg up for the next step when I get the pull of pain. Does that sound familiar?
