hello all, sorry this is my first post and a bit of advice needed!! I am 49 (may be relevant) and I think fit. Have always gone to gym approx 3/4 times a week. Got started on running a couple of months ago. First of all once round then trcak then 4 times round now have got up to 3 miles. I really really enjoy it but think I have done an injury to myself.

I did a 3.5 mile run the other week, felt fine with no probs till I got out of bed the next day. My heel hurt and at first I thought it may have been the achilles tendon so I dodnt go to gym or run for a week or so. I tentaively started running on treadmill and did 10 minutes. I cant say it really hurt next day but it wasnt right. Have ran a mile on 2 seprtate occasions since and both times it just hurts a bit the next day. Also now in the morning I hobble down the stairs like an old lady and after I have been on the soafa for a while. After a few minutes it gets more mobile. I do wear highish heels (2 inch) or so to work but am always barefoot at home. the pain seems to come from the bone on the just outside edge of my outer foot

Now the other problem is the hip on the opposite side. After a run (day after)the ball and socket joint gets a bit painful.

Now I really love my running but is my body saying.. hold on there, give it up. Have I got arthritis all of a sudden? I have read about plantar faciitis (??) could it be this. Should I see a therpaist of some kind?

I thought it may be my shoes- they are just some cross trainer type i have had for a couple of years. If I can continue to run then I guess I will have to get some proper ones but dont want to spend a lot of money if my old bones have just had it. Can anyone advise.?

Sorry for a very long first post!

I don't think your bones have had it I think you've developed some biomechanically related injuries from wearing old and incorrect foot wear. I would advise getting yourself to a specialist running shop and getting fitted for a proper pair of running shoes.

From what you've described your ankle problem does sound a little like achilles tendoitis particularly the discomfort first thing that eases off. The hip problem is likely to be muscular rather than a joint problem but could be a number of things and it could be that your other leg is overcompensating for your ankle.

Are you stretching out after your runs? A wobble board can be useful in strengthening your ankles but try standing on one foot - start with 10 seconds and build up gradually. If you really want to challenge yourself try doing it with your eyes closed but do it somewhere where you won't hurt yourself if you fall over.

Hi thanks for the reply and info! I sort of thought that part of it may be footwaer related so think I may have to fork out loads and get a pair next payday.

I am stretching after runs but only for about 2 minutes so I may need to extend that. What i did yesterday was to spend a couple of minutes here and there REALLY stretching my legs and ankles. This morning before I got out of bed I rotated them about a bit and it was no where near as bad. So either its getting better or the stretching is helping. either way think I will get some new trainers.

If you are going to run you definately need proper running shoes a reasonably priced pair will cost you around £75 but you might be able to pick up last seasons model. Let the shop assistant know your budget.

I am now the proud owner of some proper running shoes! the shop had a look at the ones I had been using and said that I may as well have been using flip flops! Perhaps my problems will now be solved. Reduced too which is always a bargain.
