Welcome to RF.
Sounds to me that you are doing just fine, just increase it little by little so you don't injure yourself.
Just one thing if you are going to take up running ensure you have the right running shoes as this will help keep you injury free, you can go to a specialist running shop and they will give you a gait analysis and work out what type of shoe will be best for you.
Oh and why wait another whole year to enter a race enter one for in a few months time and use it as a goal, go on I dare you :d
