Hi all, I fear this may be a stoopid question betraying my newbie status, but how do you measure how far you run? Is there a reliable gadget out there, or do I have to get a map and a length of cotton and fall back on my GCSE geography skills?

I use mapmyrun.co.uk to track my routes, if you use the satelite view you can see pretty much everything, failing that get a Garmin but that will set you back the best part of £200!

Three methods spring to mind... if you have one, a GPS device will measure your routes pretty darn well.

For planning out routes, use something like mapmyrun.co.uk... very good, especially using the 'follow roads' feature.

If all else fails, jump in the car and drive the route ;)

if you don't want the initial expense of a gps system then I would try out mapmyrun first.

I've just started running myself and i've bought the Nike + Ipod sports kit. I think its brilliant. Its an excellent motivator and if you calibrate it round a 400m running track its very accurate.
