Hi there :)

I'm onto my 2nd week of running from being a complete beginner. I am running every other day and have worked upto yesterday doing 2 min run, 1 min walk for 23 mins. My left knee was a little sore whilst i was running and today it's murder to be honest. It is swollen just below the knee cap towards the inner aspect. It's also stiff behind the knee too.

I'm guessing I havent warmed up or stretched enough and I'm sure my trainers arnt designed for running and maybe my landing technique isnt perfect and perhaps im landing flat footed.

I'm wanting to know how do I treat it and deal with it? Should I keep running tomorrow or stop till it's gone?

Thanks

My newbie opinion:

Give it a couple of days rest. Use this time to find a sports shop who can advise on a correct pair of running shoes, then ease yourself back into the running by reverting to your training goals from a week ago.

I usually find that pain means I was pushing myself to fast. In your case you will never regret forking out on proper shoes. The difference is dramatic.

I'm also a newbie to running. It seems that the advice that comes up most often for injuries is to get your gait analysed at a specialist running shop so they can suggest the best trainers to suit.
I agree with Hrun a couple of days rest, I know myself that's easier said than done when all you want to do is get out there, but you don't want to aggravate your knee further.

Definately get those new shoes asap... running shoes are designed specifically to help prevent these kind of injuries, and whilst elite runners may be fine wearing spikes/trainers with virtually nothing to them, us mere mortals need a lot more cushioning while our joints get used to pounding the ground :(

Sorry... I'll get my coat
Allow me to get the door:confused:

I had some friends in Rhyl, fond memories of an eating competition in the mcDonalds which I won. Come to think about it there is no real surprise I reached 18 st.

Remember another nice night too but that's not for public. Don't know what you have against Rhyl Smiler?

Filthy sea water, drug addicts taking over B&B's. The place has gone to ruin but thankfully the council has seen the light and big changes are happening at last.

The best thing about Rhyl is the Suncentre

Great stuff. Glad you liked them.

Feeling very frustrated still about my knee. Missing my run yesterday and its still painful and swollen. Hitting the brufen by tablet and by gel and have it strapped up with tubigrip.

Us nurses make the worst patients :( hoping to get out after work Wednesday morning before I crash into bed although its not looking likely.

I've only just started running and feel I'm back to square 1 already.

Dont push it or you could be months recovering.

If you need to do something then try a swim instead or something non impact. Better to take a step back than do a permanent injury.

not only did you buy them from a sheep, but you gave them to Zanshin for fathers day?

It'll pass with time smiler, just be patient and you'll soon be back on the road :)

Don't knock it till you tried it ;)

Knee is still sore so I think I shall see the GP tomorrow. Not going to do anything this week. Scared of doing more damage but feeling frustrated/upset/nervous cos I have booked myself in to do a 5K race on September 7th so it doesn't give me much time to train

Went to the GP who diagnosed torn ligaments. No running or impact sport for 2-3 weeks so it looks like off to the swimming pool for me.

Fed up and popping the pills like sweets. it's so darn sore

Hi Smiler. I am glad you have had it properly diagnosed and bummer about the enforced sabatical. Bet your new trainers look really shiny and clean sat in their box :(

Have you had some sleep now?

New trainers are looking too new in their box. I have hidden them from temptation for the time being. Yes have had some sleep thanks, however I shall pray tonight that the devil that is my youngest daughter doesn't wake at 5.30 again tomorrow
