Hi everybody,
I am Terry.
I am new to all of this forum malarky, hopefully I will soon be confident enough to start participating on a regular basis.
I am 44 (45 in a few weeks :( ) and I have been running for about 18 months.
I wish I had discovered it years ago !!
I struggle with sore calves / shins so I will be scouring threads for advice etc.

Hi Terry, welcome to the RunnersForum.

Love the avatar :) Ive been an seen the Rocky Horror Show twice and loved it!

First question about your sore calves and shins, do you have proper running shoes? First thing people will recommend is you go to your local running shop and get the shoes properly fitted, its amazing the difference it makes.

It may have taken a while to discover running but the important thing is you found it :) Now sit back, relax and enjoy the forum. Its a great place, if a bit crazy at times!

Hi O
I havent been for a few years, but I have actually been to see the Rocky Horror Show 28 times!!
I think it was the fact that my basque was a bit snug that made me start running !!
I did get my shoes from a specialised running shop. They put me on the treadmill and told me I was ok with neutral shoes. I got some Puma Phasis 4 (I was restricted by cost) and on the whole they seem to have been ok. They are in need of replacing now so I will go back and get tested again.
I seem to get a couple of moths of pain free running and then it comes back with a vengance. At the moment the pain is worst when I get up in the morning, I get quite a sharp pain from the knee down the shin. I seem to be able to run through it - I know I probably shouldn't, but we dont like to be sat feeling sorry for ourselves do we?

28times! Thats good going!

Probably a good idea to go and get your shoes and running tested again and see what they recommend. Ive never had shin pains so can't really give much more advice but check out the "injury" section of the site and if you don't find something that is similar, post a new thread and I am sure someone will be able to help you out with some good advice.

Hi Terry,

Welcome to the forum ! Like Owain says its very important to have the correct footwear at the start, as for the sore shins / calves, make sure you are not increasing the weekly mileage by a big distance, a good guideline is roughty no more than 10% increase each week.

You could try (if you are not already) running on grass or a dirt track and constantly running on roads are a killer for shins

Good luck.

Howdy Howdy Howdy, welcome to the forum :d

Good to hear you had a gait analysis to get the correct shoes... though how long have you had them? and what sort of mileage are you running at the moment? It's worth bearing in mind that the cushioning in the trainers will break down over time, and if you're running 40miles a week you ideally need a new pair of trainers every 3 months!

Your feet are the only point of contact between your body and the floor, and the absorb all the force of running and send the shock up through the legs, anything you can do to soften the blow of your feet on the ground should help the shins a little - as granty suggests, try some softer surfaces if you're able to :)

Cheers for the welcome everybody
I am probably doing 25 - 30 miles a week and the shoes are 11 months old so I suppose they are well overdue.
Its my birthday soon - so even though my wife says I am a scruffy s0d and should get some new clothes, its off to the running shop for me :d

I'm surprised there's anything left of them! lol... that's around 1200-1400miles!
Treat yourself to some nice new cushioned shoes and you'll be bouncing along :d

hi.. welcome from another newbie and fellow rocky fan ( a friend was in the show, so became a bit of a groupie!:)

Me thinks it may have been the dancing 28 times in the stilleto's thats caused the problem here!!!
