I bought a pair of Puma Complete Trailfox specifically for trail running as they're waterproof and have really good grip. The Puma Complete Trailfox have a 'sock' within the shoe which means you get a good close fit. I've nearly lost my cross country spikes a couple of times when running through deep mud and these Puma Complete Trailfox feel much more secure.

The only disadvantage of the Puma Complete Trailfox is because of their excellent waterproofing you lose a bit of breathability. Often when I go for a run in the Puma Complete Trailfox's I they are laced with sweat inside when I remove them and need to be left for 15 mins to air. However, this does not affect comfort levels.
