My 12 year old son wants to improve his 800m and 1500m pbs. He's running fit but has just started on the track and has time to do 2-3 training sessions per week. Can anyone advise how long for example it might take to get an 800m pb down from 2min 38 secs to 2 min 30secs? Or a 1500m pb down from 5m18s to 5mins? I'm wondering if this takes a few weeks or a few months of focussed training? Many thanks for any thoughts, appreciating this is not an exact science!

Hi DP1,

I realise this was posted a while ago now, but hopefully I can still be helpful.

In terms of the timeline for progressions, I agree it is definitely not an exact science. However, I can let you know my progression of times at that age to give you a rough idea....

So here goes,

800m

Age 10 - 2.42
Age 11 - 2.28
Age 12 - 2.20
Age 13 - 2.16

1500m

Age 11 - 5.20
Age 12 - 4.50
Age 13 - 4.33

In terms of the type of training I was doing at his age; I was also doing about three training sessions a week.

A typical weekly structure at that age for me would have been along the line of:

Tuesday - Interval Training
Thursday - 2 mile easy run followed by circuit training
Sunday - Either a longish run (30+ minutes) or 2 mile easy easy run followed by hill sprints
