This is my post-run drink of choice, usually in a bowl of museli.

This gives you protein and carbs in a cheaper and arguably better form then ridiculously expensive gimmicks. There is also a lot of research in this area and nutritional replenishment through milk comes out on top a lot of the time. As I say, wherever possible I have a bowl of cereal as well.

Mix SiS REGO with milk rather than water... or if you do use water, don't use as much as it suggests!

The SiS mixer bottles are rubbish for the recovery drinks, use one of the ones as suggested that have a plastic mesh in them to mix the drink properly (e.g. the maximuscle mixer bottle thingies).

If it was SiS Nocte that you had... yup, it tastes pretty awful, but you can rest assured that it's doing you plenty of good! ;)

regular chocolate milk is a good alternative with a good blend of carbs/protein.

Try high protein foods! Chicken, fish , protein shakes
your better off getting your post training protein in liquid form by the time you digest solids its to late for the "post training window"

and unfortunatly rego works better with water.. give the guys at sis an email.. ive not tried it but you could add a spoon of caster/icing sugar to your rego to taste I can't imagine it would stop absorbtion..

you see the sis stuff is very low in sugar (inc there energy drinks) where hi5 is high in sugar (no aspertain).

for dental health id prefer sis(1.8g of sugar) but for races hi5(15g).. energy drink wise:suspicious: although Id like to hear a dentists take on that.

the electrolyte drink replaces electrolytes, ideal for runs where you're sweating a lot, as it replaces the fluids and electrolytes lost through sweat.

The PSP22 is an energy drink containing carbohydrates to refuel energy stores whilst on the run.

EDIT: the PSP22 drink may contain electrolytes too (as many energy drinks do) but without reading up on them I couldn't say...

Go powder is meant for hot weather as it contains (more) electrolytes i think..

the SIS rego, when mixed with water as reccomended is grim, but with milk its nom nom

Ok results from todays 11.5 miler -

PSP22 90 mins before
500mls of water with GoElectrolyte sipped throughout the run
1 GoGel at 6.5 miles
Rego Chocolate with milk afterwards

The PSP was a bit on the sweet/sickly side so I reckon easing off on the powder which should make it more watery and palatable. The GoGel was disgusting - like swallowing fairy liquid and didn't taste too good either. However the Rego drink was the business!

it depends how hard you're pushing yourself... downing a few recovery drinks after your runs isn't going to get you a PB, but if you're training hard and your body is struggling to recover between sessions, a recovery drink may help speed up the recovery process enabling you to train harder more often.

Essentially, the drink won't make you faster, the extra training it enables you to do will make you faster - but without the extra training, benefits will be limited.

Just as a thought... isn't chocolate milk considered to be such a good post run recovery drink because of it's balance/ratio of carbs : protein? Obviously having it with something else (such as a bowl of cereal) would change this - would this have any effect on it's 'ideal' recovery properties?

Recovery drinks are not something I have thought about before but now it comes up whenever I do a big run over 90 mins I am always hungry and thirsty for 36 hours. A quick search on Google brings up lots of recipes for recovery drinks. A basic one that comes up a lot is chocolate milk + banana + whey protein. I'll have to try it next time. Also was reading that you need to have this within 15 mins of finishing the exercise, so I'll need to resist the desire to shower first!
