Hi my name is Sophie, i am 14years old and i starting running about 1 year ago. I currently train 4 days a week and the distances i compete in are the 800m and the 1500m. These are the sessions i do -

Tuesday - speed session, eg. 6x200m, 6x300m, 6x400m or a pyramid - 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m, 300m, 200m, 100m

Thursday - Circuit

Saturday - 4mile hilly run

Sunday - longer speed session, 8x400m, 6x500m, 6x2mins

My current PB's are - 800m - 2.27.55 and 1500m - 5.11.79

I got these sessions from a couple of different websites as my club does not do structured training it is more of a jogging club. Could someone please tell me if i am doing the right sessions and if i could add/change anything?
Thanks,

Sophie.

Hi Sophie,

I was a 800-1500 man back in 2003...my PB in 800 was 1:56:30...and 4:01:00 in 1500

Your plan is good overall...but you are young so you need a speed work too... add 8-10x 100m with R100 jog...and skips too...and do add some flying sprint at the end of training 50-80sprint 80-100jog x 10...for a fast 800m You will both need speed + anaerobic endurance...for a 2:10:00 800m You have to able to run a couple of 60-62s 400ms 3-4x400m
for a 1500m You will need a serious work of anaerobic (withou oxigen part) training, those interval which You enumerated are perfect but the rest between is also very important... rested in 10 x 400m 60seconds of easy jog...in 800m's 2-3min easy jog...
do incorporate in Your training a 8-10 x 200 sprint too...around 35' with 200meter easy jog between..and latter 30s rest between...

In spring/summer race period I had a lot of short sprints too..and in the autumn/winter period a longer intervals as tempo runs + gym work..abs+leg

Most successful middle distance runners still put in plenty of mileage through long runs. It can only do you good to have some long, aerobic workouts in your schedule. Just don't go out too hard in them. Your times are good by the way, at least I think so given your age. I used to run 800m and 1500m at school and I wasn't far ahead of you, and quite a way behind Tom :p

The hardest part was the 2min barrier to break in 800m...and the 4:15:00 barrier in 1500m...for that I needed a lot to work, and to make a huge preparation period...after that I worked mainly on speed (in race period) and on endurance (in late autumn/winter period)

I agree with tha above that you could add some additional speed work 100m and shorter at full pace.
Easy runs and high mileage do have a positive effect on 800 and 1500 racing, however I would not do to much of it at your age.

If you want to continue writing your own traning plans the book Daniels running formula will be very intresting to read. However if it is possible at all I would look for a good coach/trainer that is very important at your age!
